Database Activity: The Yellow Pages
What is a database?
Integrated data files organized and stored electronically in a uniform file structure that allows data elements to be manipulated, correlated, or extracted to satisfy diverse analytical and reporting needs. A collection of data.
Examples of databases:
- Google
- Books
- CDs
WolframAlpha Database:
- In creating WolframAlpha, Wolfram Research found a way to manipulate data in users' questions and display results in new, creative ways.
- WolframAlpha launched on May 15, 2009
- Computational Knowledge Engine
Yellow Pages & White Pages:
Is the yellow/ white pages a database? Give reasons for your answer.
Yes, because it is a collection of data (details on business & residential locations as well as contact information)
What can you see as some of the advantages of using this electronic database compared to the conventional paper based version of the yellow pages?
Theres's a search bar, so its faster to find what your looking for, as opposed to flipping page after page. Saves trees.
Do you see and dangers or disadvantages in this online version of the yellow pages?
On the go, this won't be available to you, unless you have wifi for your laptop or mobile.
