Website Ass.

Our assignment is to create our very own HTML website from scratch (well actually we're using Microsoft Sharepoint Designer which sort of allows one to cheat (through just editing in design view). The website must have the following features:
  • multiple pages [X]
  • interactive menu system [X]
  • specified resolution [X]
  • industry standard name [X]
  • logon [X]
  • media components including background sounds, images and downloadable audio files [X]
  • media will be of suitable formats e.g. compressed image formats [X]
  • files with downloadable in zipped format [X]
  • page dedicated to IT Careers [X]
  • storyboard [X]
  • submission of website via CD or on a folder on a USB [X]
I have decided to do my website about Adele (even though she already has an amazing website).

Storyboard/ Planning
At the moment, I plan to comprise my website of a total of 7 pages.
  1. Log In Page (default)
  2. Home Page
  3. About Adele (brief bio page)
  4. Gallery (a collection of random photos of Adele)
  5. Music (page with videos of Adele's music videos (haven't decided whether it will be downloadable (mainly because I don't know how to)), as well as downloadable songs organised by albums)
  6. News (updates on her latest concerts and other Adele-related news)
  7. IT Careers (even though it seems completely random to have this on my website, it is a requirement (I'll try my hardest to make it relate though))
Above is my draft idea of the setout of my website. The title and menu tabs will remain constant, whilst the information below changes. Note that "Home" is bolded: this signifies it is on the "Home" page.

Here is my draft stroyboard.

This is the Home Page. As you can see, "Home" is bolded to indicate that it is the home page. On the left is a profile picture of Adele, on the right is a quote of hers, and underneath that is a brief introduction.
Page 2 is the "About Adele" Page, which is a bio/profile page. The information is on the left, and an image on the right.

Page 3 leads to the Gallery. By clicking the arrows, you are navigated around the gallery of 4 images. The arrows actually lead to new pages (3.25, 3.5, 3.75) however since they are in the same format as page 3, it gives the illusion of being on the one page. The image is on the right, whilst a description of the image is on the left.

This is the "Music" page. On the left, titled "WATCH" is videos, whilst on the right side, titled "LISTEN", is songs organised by album.

The "News" page, shows updates on latest Adele related news.

On the "IT Careers" page, the 1st career is described on the left, whilst the other is described on the 2nd column.

Problems/Limitations and Solutions
  • TIME. Time is probably the biggest contstraint of this assignment and I really I doubt I'm going to finish in time, let alone have a finished product that I am actually proud of.
  • Adding to the time constraint, I realised I didn't have Microsoft Sharepoint Designer at home, meaning that I would have to complete this website at school during the scarce amount of IT lessons left. I only found out today [24 June] that we could get a copy of Sharepoint from the IT computer for free.
  • First starting the website, I was confused. I did happen to comprehend the basics of HTML coding (even though we really didn't need to) but I was mainly confused on what to base the website on. And I understand that that's something unimportant, and that the content isn't being marked on, but it still bugged me. And because of it, I had a slow start. I couldn't start my website or even my planning till I dedided what to do it on. I ended up just making it about one of my favourite singers, Adele, despite knowing the "IT Careers" page would be completely random on an Adele appreciation site (something which made me extremely apprehensive about choosing this topic).
  • The problem I am experiencing right now [24 June 10:43] is that my login is not working! It was functioning perfectly fine earlier at school, and I only edited the layout of it (I am 99.999% sure I didn't edit the script of it), and I tried on 2 different browsers (internet explorer and chrome) so its not that, so once again I'm confused. I'm guessing I accidently messed up the script, or it just doesn't work on my computer? I really don't know.
  • There's a lot of things I don't know how to do/haven't learned yet, e.g. how to make downloadable files, downloadable zipped files, compressing images?? I guess I will google them later... This is a major roadblock right now [25 June] as I've been trying to find out how to insert an embedded file for hours (Since I thought having random images everywhere for the gallery would be too messy, I wanted to depict them in a slideshow. I assumed I wouldn't of been able to make a slidehsow on Sharepoint, so I created one on Powerpoint and uploaded it to Slideshare.net, however I have no idea how to put it on). I don't even know how to put a video on! All the information I'm finding on google isn't making sense to me. I found something telling me I have to edit my contributors, then my regions, or something? But my Sharepoint won't allow me to even click on "contributors" (its not in black print, and there's a lock next to it. So I guess I have to wait till my next IT lesson (which I have no idea is when), to put my actual content on my website. Blank website = fail. Yeah, I'm not going to finish in time.
  • At the moment [27 June] I am having a major problem with my buttons. They are serisously being so annoying and so frustrating. I have no idea what caused it, but they keep messing up, and whenever I fix it, something else messes up. For example the "About Adele" button says "home" so I fix it and then my "home" button says "About Adele", or my "news" says "download" and "download" says "news." I've being trying to fix it for hours and it just asjkdaskjdsdnas. I have a feeling I am going to have to re-do all the buttons D: D: D: (And I still don't understand how to add videos.)

Overall Evaluation

I HAVE OFFICIALLY FINISHED. [28 June 10.15] Honestly, I am not happy with my finished website, but it's the best I could do with the time constraint.

There is still something "fishy" happening with my buttons, but it's improved (after re-doing it about 3 times), but you can still see when you click on "About Adele" it turns to "Home." I can't fix it. I've tried, several times. My login page is quite "bleh," because last time I edited the appearance it stuffed up, so I am not willing to try again.

After hours of trying to research about adding videos and/or slideshows to my webpages, I gave up. So my "Music" page isn't exactly how I planned it to be, instead I just put links to videos. And with my slideshow plan, I just used my backup plan (which was to just create new pages for each picture but keeping the other stuff constant to give the illusion of having a slideshow) which was pretty tedious.

BTW my website is more suited to be viewed in Chrome rather than Explorer. Firstly, because its suits the adjustment of the browser/window more (I can't really explain it), like it fits it better? Or maybe its just cause my computer screen is smaller...idk. Well secondly, when you click on the video/audio links on the "Music" page, it looks cooler. Trust me. (I can't explain it). Oh but, it doesn't give you the option to download it, it just plays it, which I suppose is a bad thing?

I also reckon my website is pretty plain. I do happen to be a fan of simplicity, but I still believe my website is pretty boring. Maybe with more time, I would of experimented more with design.
I suppose I should give myself some credit, after all I haven't done this before, and all in all, I suppose I did a pretty good job, for a beginner. Also I finished in time!!

[edit]. My friends found out a way to add videos to the website, but unfortunately for me, I have already submitted my website because I was worried that handing it in late would mean lost marks. However, it seems most of the class is handing it in late...and withthat extra time I could of improved my website drastically. Oh well. I'm still happy with my website :)
